Mating a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 cylinder gas engine, a rechargeable 400-volt battery pack, and two electric motors, the 4xe system is available for the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler. How Does a PHEV Work?
Hybrid cars use a combination of an internal combustion engine and electric motors. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) use the same combination with a rechargeable battery pack. Jeep's internal combustion engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine mentioned above. The electric power is provided by one electric motor mounted in front of the engine, another inside the transmission, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. The 4xe system uses electric power while idling, coasting, or decelerating. When additional power is requested by pressing the gas pedal, the turbocharged engine will seamlessly begin running to provide the power. Additionally, Jeep gave the 4xe vehicles the option to choose between Electric, E-Save, and Hybrid mode. Hybrid is the default setting and operates by mixing gas and electric power. E-Save mode powers down the electric motors and runs solely on the gas-powered engine. Meanwhile, Electric mode turns off the gas engine, providing zero emissions and silent driving.
How Are Jeep Electric Vehicles Charged
Upon purchasing a Jeep 4xe vehicle, owners get a Level 1 EV charger that provides 120 volts. The Level 1 charger fully charges the 4xe system in around 14 hours. For faster charging, the Level 2 EV charger is available with 240 volts. The Level 2 charger gives the 4xe system a full charge in just about 2 hours. Electric vehicle charging times vary depending on the available electrical current being supplied from the energy source, battery temperature, and the battery's condition, age, and state of charge. While driving, the Jeep 4xe system recharges itself through a process called brake regeneration, which translates kinetic energy from the friction between the brake pads and rotors into electrical energy and sends it back to the battery pack to increase or maintain its state of charge.

While a Level 1 EV charger simply plugs into any in-home outlet, a Level 2 is a hardwired charging station using a more powerful plug like one used by a washing machine.
