Learn More from Charlie's CDJR!

Hybrid technology has come a long way in the twenty-plus years that it has been used in the automotive industry. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe lineup uses some of the most advanced hybrid technology. Here at Charlie's Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want our customers to be educated about the brands we sell so they can be confident in their vehicle purchase. So please continue reading below to learn more about the hybrid technology of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe!

What Are Jeep's E-Selec Drive Modes?

The 4xe powertrain uses three drive modes, which Jeep calls E-Selec. The three E-Selec drive modes are Hybrid, E-Save, and Electric. The system defaults to Hybrid mode, which uses a fuel-saving mixture of electric and gas power to maximize fuel economy while providing the power being requested. Meanwhile, E-Save mode can be used when the battery pack becomes depleted or simply to save battery power for a later time. Lastly, Electric mode disables the turbocharged gas-powered engine, providing the Grand Cherokee with 25 miles of nearly silent, emissions-free driving! Drivers can easily switch between modes by pressing the E-Selec button of their choosing on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel.

What is Regenerative Braking?

Like most hybrids, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe uses regenerative braking. This allows the battery to be charged when the vehicle is decelerating and braking. The Grand Cherokee 4xe also uses the Max Regeneration feature. This remaps the accelerator pedal to create more aggressive regeneration when the pedal is in a low position. This allows you to slow the vehicle down without using the brake pedal. However, the brake pedal will always need to be used to bring the car to a complete stop. Max Regeneration stays on until you turn it off.

How is the Jeep 4xe System Powered?

The Grand Cherokee 4xe uses a 400-volt, 17.3-kilowatt-hour battery. With the available Level II EV charger, the battery can be fully recharged in as little as two hours. The Grand Cherokee can take on up to 24 inches of water thanks to the battery pack's waterproof casing protecting it. The battery pack powers two electric motors. One of the electric motors is mounted in front of the engine, where the alternator would normally be. The other is within the transmission, taking the place of the traditional torque converter. Gas power is provided by a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine. This setup provides drivers of the Grand Cherokee 4xewith a hybrid driving range of 470 miles, 25 miles of all-electric driving, 470 lb-ft of instant torque, and 375 horsepower.
